Alfa Laval selected by Saipem to supply heat transfer technology for one of Europe's largest carbon capture projects
Alfa Laval has been selected by Saipem, the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) contractor for Stockholm Exergi's BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage) project to supply heat transfer equipment for one of Europe's largest bioenergy carbon capture facilities. The project is expected to begin operations in 2028 and will capture, liquify, and permanently store up to 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, representing approximately one to two percent of today's total global carbon capture capacity.
Stockholm Exergi, a leading Swedish energy provider, is taking a bold step towards net-negative emissions with the first-of-its-kind large-scale BECCS initiative set to run at Europe's largest biomass-based combined heat and power plant in Stockholm. When fully operational, the facility will capture and store CO2 from the combustion of biogenic fuels, where Alfa Laval's heat transfer solutions will play a crucial role, maximizing system efficiency and heat recovery. The project is part of Sweden's climate neutrality goals, contributing to the EU's climate strategy and positioning Stockholm Exergi as an early adopter.

"The plant will require a lot of energy to capture the CO2 from the flue gas and liquify it, but with the high quality Ziepack heat exchangers from Alfa Laval, we will be able to reclaim the energy used. This energy will go back in our existing district heating system, which contributes additionally to our carbon removal targets," says Egil Nybakk, Director BECCS at Stockholm Exergi.
Alfa Laval will supply its Ziepack gas-gas interchanger alongside multiple process plate-and-frame heat exchangers, crucial for maximizing system efficiency and heat recovery, and integral parts of the core capture process. The equipment package has been selected by Saipem as part of its EPC contract for the Stockholm Exergi BECCS facility. Alfa Laval's technologies will contribute to the efficiency of the carbon capture process and support the project's ambition to become one of the world's largest facilities for the capture and permanent storage of biogenic CO2.

Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) is a key climate technology that generates renewable energy from biomass while capturing and permanently storing the resulting CO2.
The Stockholm Exergi plant, BECCS Stockholm, is expected to capture and permanently store up to 800,000 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ annually, making it one of the world's largest carbon removal facilities.The captured CO2 is then compressed and liquified, allowing for space-efficient underground or offshore storage.
