“Although poLight’s revenue in the quarter was low, and a fraction down on the same period last year, market activity remains buoyant. This is being driven by maturing consumer-related projects with a strong focus on AR|MR applications. We continue to see our product and technology platform recognised for its key advantages, its ability to address important customer pain points and its potential to enhance the user experience in future AR|MR devices.

AR|MR is not the only area offering opportunities, we also see attractive potential in the industrial segment and interest in TWedge® remains strong. A small number of OEMs are testing and qualifying TWedge® for potential use in future AR|MR display solutions. The target remains to bring this technology to market in close cooperation with selected OEMs, and to secure NRE funding over and above income from selling samples. To support the opportunities ahead, we are gradually strengthening capacity and capabilities across the organisation.

These efforts will increase operational costs, but are necessary to build long-term shareholder value and strengthen poLight’s position as a leader in next-generation optical solutions across multiple market segments, with particular emphasis on AR|MR,” explains Dr Øyvind Isaksen, CEO of poLight.

“Providing support for multiple customer proof of concept (PoC) projects in various segments and carrying out a variety of improvement projects kept the pressure on the organisation during the third quarter, although the period was relatively sluggish from an order intake and revenue perspective.

The consumer market remains challenging and is focused on cost reduction rather than implementing new innovative technology.

Augmented reality (AR) customer cases continue to develop positively, although a few design-in cases are experiencing some delays. Two design wins related to AR enterprise glasses have been secured and are currently in mass production. The customer pipeline in this segment continues to grow, and we are involved in both enterprise and consumer cases.

As for new market segments, we are continuing to address both automotive and healthcare. There seems to be a clear need for autofocus technology in the automotive market for a variety of use cases, and TLens® is being explored as one of the alternatives. Healthcare-related cases are more mature, and we are engaged with several potential customers at various stages.

Step by step, poLight is moving in the right direction, even under difficult market conditions. Nevertheless, business prospects in important future markets are maturing and we are continuing to work hard to overcome the market and operational challenges that still lie ahead!,” explains Dr Øyvind Isaksen, CEO of poLight.

«På tross av lav ordreinngang og omsetning i kvartalet, har det vært meget høy aktivitet i organisasjon relatert til å supportere flere kundekvalifikasjonsprosjekter i ulike segmenter, samt gjennomføring av en rekke forbedringsprosjekter.

Forbrukermarkedet er fortsatt utfordrende, og vektlegger fremdeles kostnadsreduksjon fremfor å implementere ny innovativ teknologi.

Trenden i kundeutviklingen for AR segmentet (utvidet virkelighet) er fortsatt positiv, selv om det har vært noen forsinkelser av planlagt markedsintroduksjon for enkelte kunder. Selskapets produkt er så langt tatt i bruk i to AR-briller allerede tilgjengelig i markedet. Kundepipelinen i dette segmentet fortsetter å vokse, og vi er jobber med mulige kunder både relatert til virksomhets/proff- og forbrukermarkedet.

Når det gjelder nye markedssegmenter, fortsetter vi å jobbe mot bilbransjen og helsesektoren. Det synes å være et behov for autofokusteknologi i forbindelse med mange bruksområder i bilbransjen, og TLens® vurderes som ett av alternativene. “The first smartphone using TLens® in the selfie camera was made available in the market during the quarter. The initial response, from a performance perspective, has been positive and we are busy demonstrating the new selfie camera to other potential customers,” said Dr Øyvind Isaksen, the CEO of poLight.

“Augmented reality (AR) customer cases continue to develop positively. Two design-wins related to AR enterprise glasses have been secured and are currently in mass production. The latest release announced during the quarter related to LLVision from China. The customer pipeline in this segment continues to grow, and we are involved in both enterprise and consumer cases.”

poLight’s CEO explained that the company’s understanding of the automotive market has matured during the quarter. “There seems to be a clear need for autofocus technology and key market players are in dialogue with us on this,” he added.

“Step by step, poLight is moving in the right direction, even under somewhat difficult market circumstances, particularly in the consumer market. Prospects for business in future important markets such as AR/VR, automotive and medical are maturing. There are still challenges to overcome, both from a market and operational point of view, which we are working hard to overcome,” he said.

The barcode/machine vision market is slowly progressing, and the TLens® is now used by five companies. We recently received a follow-on order from one of them. All five cases are still shipping to customers and are expected to do so for several more years. New releases with the same customers are being discussed, while new companies are in the process of qualifying our technology.  Other market segments, such as Healthcare and Automotive, are still at an early stage but look promising.

“Once again, we had a busy quarter supporting an increasing number of customer cases and, not least, preparing for a smartphone project. We have been working hard over many years to qualify for our first smartphone project. Although we have been close to a market breakthrough several times, last-minute changes in our customers product release strategy have delayed our entrance into the smartphone market. This can obviously still happen, but a firm purchase order and the fact that we already have started shipping material for mass production use must be seen as strong positive signal.

A poLight team was present at CES 2023 in Las Vegas, where we met several existing and potential new customers in several market segments. During our stay, we were able to see and experience products using our unique product, such as Magic Leap, Vuzix and XVisio´s latest AR glasses, as well as Sharp´s new camera module. So, overall, we have experienced some hectic weeks and months, with a lot of encouraging progress”, said Dr. Øyvind Isaksen, the CEO of poLight ”.

EBITDA totalled NOK -15.0 million in Q4 2022, compared with NOK -5.7 million in Q4 2021. The most significant contributor for the decline in EBITDA is due to NOK 12 million recognised as a cost reduction as a result of the positive outcome of the VAT appeal in Q4-21.

KEY EVENTS in the Quarter

Overall, we are experiencing good and encouraging progress, but there are also challenges which need to be tackled. The augmented reality cases we are exploring remain promising, and it has been confirmed that the first enterprise augmented reality (AR) product using TLens® will be on the market this year. This is a very important milestone for us. Even though the smartphone OEMs have been negatively impacted by market sentiment lately, PoC in this area have contributed to a hectic quarter. Other market segments such as industrial and medical are maturing. An increasing number of barcode cases are being explored and the first medical use case for TLens®, a disposable laparoscope with autofocus, is undergoing qualification.”, said Dr. Øyvind Isaksen, the CEO of poLight.

EBITDA totalled NOK -11.3 million in Q3 2022, compared with NOK -2.9 million in Q3 2021. The net income in Q3 last year was attributable to reversed accrued employer’s national insurance contributions (NICs) of NOK 5 million relating to the share option plan due to the share price decline in the quarter.

As at 30 September 2022 poLight had cash of NOK 104.4 million, compared with NOK 228.7 million as at 30 September 2021.

EBITDA totalled NOK -13.9 million in Q2 2022, compared with NOK -13.7 million in Q2 2021.

As at 30 June 2022 poLight had cash of NOK 124.4 million, compared with NOK 55.6 million as at 30 June 2021.

Horten, 12 May 2022 - poLight ASA (OSE: PLT) today announced its results for Q1 2022.

Customer-related activities continued at a high level in the first quarter. poLight is actively engaged in several segments.

EBITDA totalled NOK -18.5 million in Q1 2022, compared with NOK -20.2 million in Q1 2021.

As at 31 March 2022 poLight had cash of NOK 150.2 million, compared with NOK 68.4 million as at 31 March 2021.

“We made good progress in many areas during the quarter, although it was somewhat impacted by the challenging situation in China. Progress in the augmented reality cases we are exploring remains promising, and there are candidates for design-wins this year and onwards. With respect to smartphone cases, we see OEMs being more cautious about releasing new phone models, and we foresee this will impact the timing of the first smartphone case for poLight. Horten, 18 February 2022 - poLight ASA (OSE: PLT) today announced its results for Q4 2021.

poLight made good progress during the quarter, with generally positive progress in most customer cases resulting in the first design-win within AR segment, another design-win related to barcode scanning and strengthened opportunity pipeline. Further poLight won the VAT appeal case and raised NOK 12.8 million in gross proceeds in a Subsequent Share Issue during the quarter.

EBITDA totalled NOK -5.7 million in Q4 2021, compared with NOK -10.0 million in Q4 2020.

As at 31 December 2021 poLight had cash of NOK 157.8 million, compared with NOK 77.2 million as at 31 December 2020.

“The design-win related to the augmented reality (AR) product is of strategic importance for the company. The activity and opportunity pipeline we see in this market segment is impressive. The technical attributes of TLens, its speed, compactness, low power consumption and no gravity sensitivity, are viewed as key for AR applications.

Smartphone-related activity remains high. Together with our customers, we are expending a lot of effort and resources to mature cases and qualify TLens for commercial use. Horten, 19 February 2021 - poLight ASA (OSE: PLT) today announced its results for fourth quarter of 2020.

During the quarter, poLight made progress in positioning TLens, and its technology platform more generally, for augmented reality, smartphones, accessories, industrial and medical use cases. There has been high interaction with the smartphone ecosystem during the quarter, and progress has led to market release discussions.

The announced barcode scan engine design-win is for the Honeywell EX30 product. According to Honeywell’s website: “The Extended FlexRange™ EX30 2D Scan Engine for warehouse and distribution centre operations seamlessly reads barcodes from a distance of 10 cm to 20 m using the latest technology for a fast auto-focus mechanism.” During the quarter, poLight received a follow-up order to establish buffer stock.

EBITDA in the fourth quarter was NOK -10.0 million, compared with an EBITDA of NOK -13.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Cash at 31 December 2020 came to NOK 77.2 million.

Through 2019, poLight made significant progress towards commercialisation of its unique autofocus lens, and engagement with potential customers in the smartwatch phone, smartphone, barcode, AR and other segments increased in number and scope.  The progress was reflected in design awards at the start of 2020 and in ongoing Proof-of-Concept (PoC) projects supported by poLight across a wide range of markets that rely on small, high-quality cameras.

Horten, 24 October 2019 - poLight ASA (OSE: PLT) today announced its results for the third quarter of 2019. poLight’s TLens has matured from PoCs and product qualification stages to currently being included in three product-specific projects.

In third quarter 2019, poLight delivered a total of 15,553 TLens units and 32,253 PDA50 drivers to support testing by potential customers and to prepare for market launch.

These shipments reflect continued development along the path to a potential design win. Three projects have developed into specific products for potential market launch. One of the projects is for a wearable product which is planned for market release in 2019. The two other projects are smartphone and barcode related with potential market launch in mid-2020. The progress supports increased confidence in the commercialisation of poLight’s technology.

EBITDA in the third quarter was NOK -11.7 million, compared with an EBITDA of NOK -31.2 million in the third quarter of 2018.

“We have made good progress on the customer projects within wearables, barcode and smartphones and continue towards commercialisation of the TLens technology. Commercial adoption will be an important proof-point that our unique products enable new and lasting applications for both industrial and consumer segments. Diversification will be important in building our revenue base and position poLight for long-term growth,” said Øyvind Isaksen, the CEO of poLight.

On 11 and 17 October, poLight received a second and third purchase order, respectively, totalling 45,700 units of TLens Silver and 48,000 ASIC drivers, to prepare for market launch of a wearable device by an undisclosed OEM.
