]]>Johannes Larcher, CEO, Storytel:
"Our sharpened focus on profitability and continued growth in our 10 core markets, bolstered by our strong operational and financial performance in 2023, enables us to update Storytel’s mid-term financial targets. We now expect to reach the previously communicated mid-term financial targets for adjusted EBITDA margin and operational cash flow already in 2024, and we are able to upgrade our profitability targets for 2026.
Storytel is doing substantially better financially than a year ago, and we have chosen to increase our focus on profitability and enhanced cash flow generation beyond the previously outlined guidance. This has led us, amongst other measures, to the difficult decision to adjust the size of our team, resulting in 13% of our total workforce leaving the company.”
Today, Storytel announced an efficiency optimization initiative to better align its cost structure with the revised strategic focus and evolving business requirements.
The efficiency optimization initiative includes a reduction of the workforce by approximately 80 team members, or 13%, compared to December 2023. Measures will be implemented in the first quarter of 2024, mostly with immediate effect, and will reach full run-rate in the second half of 2024.
Storytel also announces its preliminary and unaudited results for the fourth quarter of 2023 ahead of the year-end report to be published on 15 February 2024. The operational performance in the fourth quarter 2023 continued to be strong, with preliminary total streaming revenues of 858 MSEK, representing a growth of 16% or 14% at constant exchange rates. Preliminary total group revenues increased to 946 MSEK, a growth of 9%. For the full year, organic streaming revenues at constant exchange rates increased by 12.5% - well above the guidance of at least 11%.
In total, Storytel recognized Items Affecting Comparability (IACs) of 672 MSEK in the quarter, following the further emphasis on profitability. Of the IACs, 465 MSEK relate to non-cash impairment charges on goodwill in accordance with IAS 36 attributed to Audiobooks.com; 166 MSEK of the IACs relate to non-cash write downs that are mainly concentrated on content assets in expansion markets; and the remaining 40 MSEK of IACs relate to restructuring charges in personnel and other operational expenditures. As a result, the preliminary, adjusted group operating profit in the fourth quarter was -8 MSEK, and -680 MSEK including IACs.
Preliminary, adjusted EBITDA in the fourth quarter was up 62% to 86 MSEK, representing a margin of 9.1%. Including IACs of 98 MSEK, EBITDA was -12 MSEK. The preliminary adjusted EBITDA for the full year of 2023 was 248 MSEK, a growth of 170% and representing a margin of 7.1% - well above the guidance of 6.4%.
Preliminary operational cash flow was 46 MSEK in the quarter and 89 MSEK for the full year - above the guidance of at least 80 MSEK. During the quarter, Storytel repaid 100 MSEK in bank debt, reducing financial debt to 750 MSEK with cash and cash equivalents of 434 MSEK as of 31 December 2023.

Johannes Larcher, VD, Storytel:

Together with KPN we will create great value for the Dutch consumers by offering a local catalog of more than 1 million audio stories, best sellers and all time hits,” says Ana Julia “AJ” Ghirello, SVP of Global Partnerships at Storytel.
Storytel’s streaming service and first-class technology platform will be offered as an add-on to KPN’s broad entertainment offer, with an attractive launch offer.
“Our time is becoming increasingly precious, which means we have to make choices in the information we consume. It explains why audiobooks have become so popular in a short time,” says Robin Clements, CMO Consumer Market at KPN. “In addition to the best networks, KPN offers the best entertainment to our customers, an offer that now also includes a premium catalog of audio stories from successful Storytel. And at KPN we can offer that in an advantageous package. That doesn't just sound like a good story, it is a good story!”

]]>Founded in 2022, US-based ElevenLabs has rapidly grown to become one of the world’s leading AI voice technology research companies, developing the most compelling AI speech software for publishers and creators.
The partnership with ElevenLabs accentuates Storytel’s recognition of the vast potential presented by the advancements in generative AI and synthetic voices, and the company’s aspiration to take a leading position in AI narration, as a complement to organic voices.
“We are proud and excited to have reached this multi-year agreement with ElevenLabs. As AI voices have become more sophisticated and versatile, Storytel aspires to offer our customers more choice by deploying this best-in-class solution to tailor their listening experience by choosing from a wider range of voices,” says Johan Ståhle, Chief Product Officer at Storytel.
“Furthermore, synthetic voices will enable significant reductions in production costs for publishers as well as ourselves, thereby allowing an even richer and more diverse range of audiobook titles and genres to be produced in more languages,” says Johan Ståhle.
The collaboration with ElevenLabs kicks off this summer with the pilot launch of the Storytel VoiceSwitcher feature for select audiobooks in English. The VoiceSwitcher will allow Storytel users to seamlessly switch between a selection of first class AI voices complementing the strong offering of organic human narration in the service. Before the end of the year, Storytel will then add support for Swedish and Danish AI voices before expanding the VoiceSwitcher functionality to additional markets.
To further deepen the company’s commitment and collaborative role in the AI field, Storytel has committed to a focused strategic investment in ElevenLabs’ ongoing financing round.
“ElevenLabs is thrilled to partner up with Storytel, a company which so clearly shares our passion of bringing the world's best audio stories to the world. With a mutual goal of pushing the boundaries, we aim to revolutionize the implementation of AI solutions that enhance the work of publishers and creators. The art of audio storytelling lies in the power of narration, shaping the way stories are perceived. Through our collaboration with Storytel, cutting-edge synthetic voices allow users to personalize their listening experience like never before,” says Mati Staniszewski, CEO at Eleven Labs.

The Board of Directors in Storytel has decided on the following mid-term financial targets:
Revenue
● Total Net Sales to reach at least 5,000 MSEK in 2026 through organic growth.
● Organic average annual streaming revenue growth of 15 percent.
EBITDA margin
● EBITDA margin of at least 12 percent in 2026, with a long-term ambition of 15 percent or higher.
CAPEX
● CAPEX of about 5 percent of Group revenue.
● Positive and significant increase in Operational Cash Flow from 2023.
“Together with the Board, my Executive Management Team and I have now set the direction for our strategic journey going forward and how we will deliver, step by step, in accordance with our mid-term financial targets. Storytel is a well-positioned leader in the fast growing audiobooks sector, and our strategy of operating both D2C Streaming services and leading Publishing houses provides us with valuable advantages. In Streaming, we have a proven business model with a current EBITDA margin of over 20 percent in the Nordics and the US, excluding central overhead. We will allocate our resources to markets with the right conditions for success, and by increasing our subscriber base to more than 3.2 million paid subscribers by 2026, we are in a position to deliver growth with increased profitability over time,” says Johannes Larcher, CEO of Storytel since October 2022.
Combined value
Operating both Publishing and D2C Streaming businesses creates unique value for Storytel. Content from the Publishing business creates a differentiated content line-up that benefits the Streaming business, and the opportunities created by the Streaming business enhance Storytel’s value proposition for authors. The combination secures content supply and provides differentiation as well as improved content economics over time.
Focus on ten core markets
The growth strategy is focused on ten selected core streaming markets with high audiobook penetration or high incremental growth potential, and includes the Nordics, US, Netherlands, Poland, Turkey and Bulgaria, in which Storytel already has a leading position. Besides the ten core markets, Storytel intends to drive a careful and capital-efficient expansion strategy in a small number of high-potential streaming markets selected from the company’s earlier expansion efforts.
Stronger unit economics
Benefits from improved scale effects, higher efficiency and decreasing content costs are the main pillars of the profitable growth strategy to get to the right unit economics. Storytel sees great potential in achieving lower content cost through investing in its own content to improve profitability over time. As its subscriber and revenue base expand, Storytel expects further economies of scale in the organization and in the central overhead function.
Investments with highest return
Storytel has established structured processes with the aim to allocate resources to areas with highest return, as well as balance the right level of investment to increase profitability over time by:
● Achieving higher levels of content and product differentiation in strategic markets, as the company continues to consolidate its solid leadership position.
● Deploying sufficient marketing investment at increased levels of marketing effectiveness to drive substantial incremental revenue growth, while continuing to capture operational efficiencies and scale-effects.
● Being valued as a great place to work that will support attracting and retaining the best talent in the field.
“The high level of ambition to continue the positive trajectory of improving efficiency and scalability across the business remains unchanged. Continued investments in content as well as tech and product development, combined with efficient marketing and streamlined operational processes, are the foundation for our sustained and profitable growth journey ahead,” says Johannes Larcher, CEO of Storytel.

“The offer I got from Storytel is a once in a lifetime kind of offer for an author. So it didn’t take long for me to decide to accept it. Koskinen will have the possibility to continue living on in the world long after I have typed my last full stop to my last book. I consider this a remarkable acknowledgment of my work,” says Seppo Jokinen.
Marta Hedener, Regional Content Manager at Storytel:
“Storytel’s road to success leads through compelling stories and great authorships. We are excited and honored to have the privilege to manage Seppo Jokinen’s respected and beloved works and legacy, but also inspired to take the Crime fans to new crime scenes and adventures together with Sakari Koskinen.”
