YIT to start construction of Jätkäsaari swimming and sports center in Helsinki - value to YIT EUR 94 million

YIT and the City of Helsinki have signed an agreement for the implementation phase of the Jätkäsaari swimming and sports center and construction work will start at the beginning of September in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki. The project will be implemented as a cooperative project management contract. The value of the contract was specified during the development phase at approximately EUR 94 million, which will be recorded in YIT's order book for the third quarter of 2026.

The implementation phase was preceded by a development phase of nine months during which the design solutions were specified. During the development phase, the size of the swimming pool's user base was increased from 400,000 annual visitors to 550,000. After completion, the 21,000-square-meter building will provide space for amateur athletes training in more than 20 different sports. A yard area will be built on the roof of the building, which will house a running track and exercise equipment, among other things. The total number of visits to all sports facilities is estimated at 850,000 visitors per year.

Construction will begin at the beginning of September with earthworks and substructure and foundation work. The premises will be taken into use in late 2029 or early 2030. The building is designed to be as energy efficient as possible and low-carbon solutions have also been taken into account throughout the project.  For example, heat recovered from the pool facilities' exhaust air will be utilized for heating and part of the building's electricity needs will be covered by its own solar power system. Low-carbon concrete and recycled materials will be favored in material choices. In the design, attention has been paid to equal access and accessibility.

The center will house an eight-lane 50-meter swimming pool, a teaching pool with adjustable depth, a diving pool, a wading and children's pool, a water slide, a therapy and multifunctional pool, a cold pool, and a jacuzzi. Over a dozen different training facilities, such as a hall for team sports, group exercise hall, dance and yoga studios, gym, functional training area, skill and motor skills hall, bouldering area, and boxing and martial arts halls will also be built for the center.

"We have just completed a nine-month development phase, during which we have developed the project together with YIT and ensured the feasibility of its objectives. YIT has brought its strong production and construction know-how to the project, which has enabled us to ensure the constructability of the project, the implementation of critical procurements and the construction schedule," says project manager Jean Toljander from the City of Helsinki and continues, "The project has progressed as planned, and the implementation phase that is now starting is taking the project towards completion, so that the building can be opened for customers as planned at the turn of the year 2029-2030."
