Apotea, Sweden’s largest online pharmacy, has set new climate targets that have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Apotea was the first among Swedish e-commerce companies to have its targets validated by SBTi back in 2021. With the new targets, the company is now taking the next step in its climate transition and raising its level of ambition. The new targets run until 2030 and replace the previous goals, which were set to expire in 2025. The approval marks an important milestone in Apotea’s ongoing climate work and confirms that reducing emissions remains a priority for the company.
In recent years, Apotea has focused on reducing emissions within its own operations – for example through environmentally certified logistics centers equipped with rooftop solar panels and renewable electricity supplied to its headquarters and prescription units. Another key focus has been the electrification of transport in close collaboration with the company’s logistics partners.
The new climate targets represent a higher level of ambition – particularly within the supply chain, where the majority of Apotea’s climate impact lies. Apotea’s efforts are therefore focused on increasing dialogue with its suppliers in order to reduce emissions together across the entire value chain.
"Apotea has made several investments to reduce our own emissions, but to take the next step, we need to drive change together with our suppliers. I therefore want to encourage all our suppliers who have not yet set targets to commit to science-based climate goals. The more we align our efforts, the faster we can reduce emissions – and that benefits everyone," says Pär Svärdson, CEO of Apotea.
Apotea’s new climate targets:
- Apotea commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 42.0% by 2030 from a 2024 base year. *
- Apotea also commits to continue active annual sourcing of 100% renewable electricity through 2030.**
- Apotea further commits that 73.3% of its suppliers by emissions covering purchased goods and services, will have science-based targets by 2030.*
"We are proud that our climate targets have been scientifically reviewed and approved by the SBTi. The climate crisis is becoming increasingly urgent, and everyone must do what they can. We want to be a company that makes a difference – one that shows the transition is not only necessary but also possible. With higher ambitions, we are stepping up our efforts across the entire value chain," says Erika Svensson, Head of Sustainability at Apotea.
*The target levels are scientifically established in line with the SBTi standard and reflect what is required by the latest climate science to limit global warming to 1.5 °C.
**Apotea already uses only renewable electricity in its own operations. Through this new target, we commit to continuing to choose electricity from renewable sources.
About the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) helps companies set greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets in line with the latest climate science. Validation by SBTi ensures transparency and credibility in corporate climate action. The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
