BeammWave has successfully introduced Digital Beamforming to the standardization agenda at the 3GPP RAN4#119 meeting in Dalian, China, marking a pivotal moment for the future of the 6G mmWave ecosystem.


The 3GPP has officially commenced evaluating the feasibility of Digital Beamforming for device architectures (UE RF) in high-frequency bands (FR2). This study explores the potential of including Digital Beamforming as a standard reference architecture in 6G, establishing it as a highly capable evolution alongside traditional analog beamforming.

"Bringing Digital Beamforming to the standardization table is a critical step forward in addressing the reliability and performance of high-frequency FR2 networks," says Joakim Axmon, Senior Expert Systems and Standards at BeammWave. "We look forward to continuing this work alongside the ecosystem to drive the digital evolution of 6G, ensuring future networks are both technically robust and commercially viable."

The evaluation will thoroughly study two primary areas critical to network operators and device manufacturers:

  • Cost and Power Efficiency: Assessing how modern, state-of-the-art technologies can deliver significant enhancements in power consumption and cost compared to the initial 5G study phase.
  • System and Specification Impact: Outlining the specific effects on base station implementations (gNB/aNB), Radio Resource Management (RF/RRM) requirements, and overall network procedures to ensure seamless integration.
