Fifax has restarted commercial deliveries of fish

Fifax, the Åland-based land-based RAS farmer of rainbow trout, has restarted commercial deliveries of fish after a break of more than two years. The first delivery of fish left today on Monday towards the the production facility of Fifax partner Kalavapriikki in Kuopio.

The fish is prepared for the transport on the Fifax harvest line in Eckerö and are first transported to the mainland and then onwards to Kuopio. Fifax announced in July that it has entered a long-term frame agreement with Kalavapriikki covering annual deliveries of approximately 1.200 tons of gutted rainbow trout.

Commercial deliveries of Fifax fish were interrupted for over two years due to an IHN infection confirmed at the facility, and the subsequent sanitation project. Farming activities were restarted in March 2023, when the first batch of eggs were introduced to the Eckerö hatchery.

”This is a really important day for us! We are extremely happy to be able to start deliveries of fish after a long wait. Getting to this point has required significant efforts and a lot of patience from our whole team, our shareholders and other partners.

Our collaboration with Kalavapriikki is an important part of our plans, and we have prepared for this day together during the early autumn. It’s great to now together get moving with the real work, bringing sustainable domestic fish to the plates of consumers”, says Fifax CEO Samppa Ruohtula.

Going forward, fish deliveries wiill leave from Eckerö to customers weekly, and the delivery volumes will gradually grow towards the targeted level corresponding to full capacity. The fish stock is at the moment around 650 tons, and the ramp-up of this continues in parallel with the deliveries.

Fifax in brief

Fifax’s vision is to be a forerunner in large-scale sustainable fish farming with a minimal impact on the environment, so that locally and sustainably produced fish can be enjoyed by its customers all year round. Established in 2012, Fifax utilizes ultra-intensive Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) technology based on the principle of an almost completely closed water circulation within the facility, where the fish live in large land-based indoor tanks. Indoor tanks better safeguard against external factors, and the environmental impact and pollution from the facility is significantly lower when compared to traditional fish farming in water bodies.

Fifax Plc’s shares have been listed in Nasdaq First North Growth Market Finland.
