The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated Gränges’ climate goals for near-term 2030 and net-zero 2040. This means that the goals are aligned with the latest climate science and consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement and that Gränges is committed to driving emission reductions in line with science.
Gränges joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in June 2022 and submitted its new climate goals for validation in January 2023. The approval from SBTi confirms Gränges’ strong sustainability commitment and dedication to reducing the climate impact from its business and along the value chain.
“This is an important milestone in our sustainability journey. SBTi-validated climate goals give confidence to our customers that they can get industry-leading sustainable and circular solutions from Gränges. I look forward to working with our partners to drive innovation, decarbonization, and growth in the aluminium industry”, says Jörgen Rosengren, President and CEO.
With the SBTi approval, Gränges has committed to the below targets:
Net-zero target
- Reach net-zero GHG emissions across the value chain by 2040.
Long-term targets
- Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 90% by 2040 from a 2021 base year.
- Reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, fuel- and energy related activities, upstream transportation and distribution, business travel, and downstream transportation and distribution by 97% per ton packed product within the same timeframe.
Near-term targets
- Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 from a 2021 base year.
- Reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, fuel- and energy related activities, upstream transportation and distribution, business travel, and downstream transportation and distribution by 57% per ton packed product within the same timeframe.
Continued strong focus on recycling, low-carbon primary aluminium and higher use of renewable energy in Gränges’ own operations will be key pathways to reach net-zero.
“The approval confirms that we have trustworthy and ambitious climate goals and decarbonization plans. I’m proud of all colleagues at Gränges who have contributed to developing our ambitious action plans towards net-zero and who are highly engaged in making these plans happen”, says Sofia Hedevåg”, SVP Sustainability.

About SBTi
The SBTi is a global partnership between Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Science-based targets provide a clearly defined pathway for companies and financial institutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, helping prevent the worst impacts of climate change and future-proof business growth. Targets are considered science-based if they are in line with the level of decarbonization required to keep global warming to well-below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.
