Today, 6 May 2022, sees the official reopening of Härnösand Prison. The Duvan 1 property has undergone extensive redevelopment and will initially house 87 prison places.
The prison was originally built in 1861 and was in use until 2009, when it was closed. Intea and the Swedish Prison Service have led the project to reopen the prison since February 2021. The Prison Service will occupy around 7,300 sqm over a 15-year lease that runs until July 2037. The preliminary annual rental value is SEK 28.4 million.
"The new places at Härnösand are a very welcome addition to our prison capacity," says Martin Holmgren, Director General of the Swedish Prison Service.
"The redevelopment of Härnösand Prison shows that restoring existing buildings instead of constructing new ones works very well. Together with the Swedish Prison Service, we have successfully brought this project to fruition in a short period of time," says Kjell-Åke Nilsson, Head of Business Development at Intea.
