Koskisen Corporation press release, 30 April 2025 at 09:00
Koskisen Corporation's Mäntsäläntie and Tehdastie plant areas will be connected by a district heating pipe, which will be built by Loimua Oy, the heat production operator for Koskisen’s production plants in Järvelä. Sawmill production under the Sawn Timber Industry segment is located on Mäntsäläntie, while the Panel Industry segment's birch plywood and chipboard production is located on Tehdastie.
A district heating connection pipe with a length of approximately four kilometres will be built between the plant areas, along with the necessary connections and modifications to the existing heat and power plants. The construction of the connecting pipe will start in summer 2025 and it will be in production use in early spring 2026. The investment in the district heating connection pipe will be made by Loimua.
The construction of the district heating connection pipe covers the increased energy consumption of the Sawn Timber Industry segment, secures the adequate availability of heat energy in the event of potential disruptions, and ensures good delivery reliability for sawn timber. The consumption of heat energy in sawmill production has grown due to the increased capacity of the new sawmill. The increase in heat energy will also make it possible to increase the sawmill production volume from the current level of 400,000 m3 in the future.
"Connecting the district heating networks will enable synergies in heat production at both plant areas, reduce the need for the construction of reserve power based on fossil fuels and increase renewable electricity production due to the increased stability of the volume of heat production. Connecting the district heating networks of the Tehdastie and Mäntsäläntie plant areas will also allow us to fully utilise unused capacity, which naturally improves our energy efficiency," says Markku Lähteenmäki, Director of Environment, Quality and Safety at Koskisen Corporation.
The advantages of the district heating connection pipe that will connect the plant areas:
- Energy savings of approximately 6,000 MWh per year
- The opportunity to increase biofuel-powered renewable electricity production by 7,000 MWh per year
- The opportunity to optimise the use and maintenance of biofuel-powered boilers
- The opportunity to utilise the electric boilers at the plant areas as shared reserve power for balancing peaks in the demand for heat
