Inside Information: Significant Order for Bittium Wireless Ltd, a Subsidiary of Bittium Corporation, for Expanding the Austrian Armed Forces' Tactical Communications Network

Bittium Wireless Ltd, a subsidiary of Bittium Corporation, has received a significant purchase order for tactical communications system's products, life cycle services, and testing systems from its Austrian cooperation partner Cancom Austria AG. Cancom Austria acts as the integrator of Bittium's advanced communications solutions as part of the Austrian Armed Forces' tactical communications network. The purchase order is valued at approximately EUR 18.5 million. The products will be supplied during the years 2025-2026, and life cycle services will be provided during the years 2025-2038.

The purchase order is a continuation of a substantial purchase contract signed in 2018 which started the renewal of the Austrian Armed Forces' tactical communications with a complete IP-based system. Since 2019, Bittium has supplied its software-defined Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network™ (TAC WIN) as the core of the network, forming the backbone for the Army's broadband communications. In addition, Bittium has supplied Bittium Tough Comnode™ devices and Bittium Tough VoIP™ solutions to enable voice and messaging across the network. Now the coverage of the Austrian tactical communications network will be expanded and Cancom Austria will integrate more products of the TAC WIN system, as well as Tough Comnode devices, and accessories to the network entity. The life cycle services included in the purchase order consist of support and maintenance for the devices and software, and test systems are provided to maintain and develop local testing capability.

Cancom Austria AG is an Austrian information technology company selected by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defence as the supplier of their tactical communications network. In addition to Bittium's solutions, Cancom Austria integrates their own and third-party solutions to the network.

Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network™

Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network (TAC WIN) is a software-defined radio (SDR) based wireless broadband network system intended for military and public safety use. With the system, MANET (mobile ad hoc network), link, and connection networks can be formed into one logical IP network quickly, no matter what the location is. Bittium TAC WIN is compatible with existing fixed and wireless network infrastructures. The core of the system is a tactical router that enables users to freely form both wired and wireless broadband data transfer IP connections. The tactical router also enables connections to different types of terminals and other communications systems in order to connect them into a single communication network. In addition to the router, the system comprises three types of radio heads, and each radio head covers its own frequency band area and can be used for flexible formation of optimized network topologies for different communication needs. All the products of the system are designed for harsh conditions, and thanks to the system's automated functions, the implementation of the system can be done quickly. The versatile Bittium Tough Comnode fulfills the data transfer needs of the mobile troops by functioning for example as a VoIP phone, an IP router, and an SHDSL repeater. Bittium Tough Comnode is rugged and easy to install in different environments and it is also portable by soldiers on the battlefield. The device is compatible with the software defined radio based Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network™ (TAC WIN) system and Bittium Tough SDR™ radios, which are meant for broadband tactical communications. The Tough Comnode device offers diverse connectivity options also to third-party equipment and systems. Bittium Tough Comnode also enables using legacy Combat Net Radios (CNR) as part of the IP-based tactical communication system (Radio over IP, RoIP).
