Integrum's OPRA™ Implant System is now available at Memorial Hermann Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital, Texas
Memorial Hermann Orthopaedic & Spine Hospital in Houston has launched an Osseointegration program with Integrum's OPRA™ Implant System.
Osseointegration (OI) is a life-changing surgical technique for amputees, in which an implant is anchored in the bone and directly attached to a prosthesis. OI eliminates the need for a prosthetic socket, the most challenging part of fitting a prosthesis often leading to pain and skin/soft tissue problems. OI has been shown to improve function, walking ability and overall quality of life for people with limb loss.
Integrum's OPRA™ Implant System consists of an anchorage element (Fixture) and a skin-penetrating device (Abutment). The Fixture is surgically inserted into the femur, and after a healing time of several months, the Abutment is connected to the Fixture. The prosthetic leg is then attached directly to the Abutment via the Axor™, a prosthetic connection and safety device.
"At the Center for Limb Optimization and Restoration, our interdisciplinary medical and rehabilitation team aims to provide exceptional patient care and expertise," said Danielle Melton, M.D., a specialist in the rehabilitation of people with amputations and the Director of the Amputee Program at TIRR Memorial Hermann and associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). "We are focused on improving outcomes and getting our patients one step closer to achieving their potential. We are always looking for new ways to improve our patient's quality of life."
Besides Dr. Melton, the Osseointegration program is led by a team of UTHealth orthopaedic surgeons including Matthew Koepplinger, DO, David Doherty. Jr, MD, Jim Kellam, MD and Ken Mathis, MD.
Integrum's OPRA™ Implant System is the only FDA-approved, bone-anchored prosthetic solution available in the United States.
"We are delighted to be collaborating with the team at Memorial Hermann," said Maria Lopez, CEO of Integrum. "It's an exciting time for osseointegration in the United States and we are glad to see reputable health systems like Memorial Hermann adopt the technology."
