Uppsala Municipality has selected NYAB, together with its partner Azvi, as the general contractor for the construction of Uppsala Tramway. It has also awarded an order for Phase 1 of the project that includes design work, procurement of subcontractors, establishment of a production schedule, as well as calculation of project costs.
NYAB and Azvi, a company specializing in track, electrical, signalling and telecom works in railway projects, will operate through an integrated joint venture, where both parties have a 50% participation and shall be jointly and severally liable for the client.
NYAB estimates the order for Phase 1 to have a value of SEK 150-200 million (approximately EUR 13-18 million) for the joint venture. Phase 1 is expected to be completed within eleven months of the contract signing. In accordance with the Swedish Public Procurement Act, the order is subject to a 10-day appeal period, after which a contract can be signed.
Participation in Phase 1 of the project makes NYAB well positioned to receive an order for Phase 2 that includes the construction work and that NYAB estimates to have a total value of SEK 5 billion (approximately EUR 440 million) for the joint venture. The contract sum will be specified during Phase 1. Phase 2 of the project is ordered separately by Uppsala Municipality and is planned to be started in 2025 and completed in 2029.
Uppsala Tramway is an urban development project aimed at improving public transport and contributing to sustainable urban development. The tramway is planned to include 17 km of double track and 22 stops. The project scope includes the design and construction of the track system, platforms, rectifier stations, and other necessary components for a fully functioning tramway system. Additionally, it includes streets, pedestrian and bicycle paths, public spaces, bridges, tunnels, and retaining walls.
