Polymer Factory Sweden AB (publ) has been approved for a grant of €455k from the European Defence Fund (EDF) for participation in the project Nano-SHIELD. The Company will contribute with the development of dendritic polymers for use in products protecting against chemical, biological, radiation, and nuclear (CBRN) threats. The project spans over three years, starting in early 2023.

The project Nano-SHIELD focuses on development of products that will have properties for elimination of bacteria, viruses (biological protection), degradation of chemicals from the air, and attenuation of radiation. The aim is for the systems to be in standard products, such as advanced facemasks, air filters, and coveralls for emergency use in standard emergency toolboxes. Polymer Factory will work on the development of dendritic polymers and other highly functional polymers for selective absorption and neutralization of toxic molecules (i.e., chemical weapons) and biological entities (i.e., biological weapons).

The grant from the EDF focuses on research on innovative and future-oriented defence solutions, and Polymer Factory is part of a pan-European consortium consisting of eight participants stemming from industry (SMEs), academia and research institutes.  The project spans over three years and is planned to start in early 2023. The grant covers 100% of the costs for the project and will be paid in three stages over the three-year project period.

CEO Elin Mignérus comments:
"We are very happy to receive this grant from the European Defence Fund, and to be part of such an exciting project. This will really provide Polymer Factory an opportunity to widen the applications for our dendritic technologies; with the aim to create products that help protect EU citizens against CBRN threats, this project can have a true impact on the future."

CTO Michael Malkoch comments:
"Nano-SHIELD aims at delivering tomorrow's groundbreaking respiratory device products to counteract threats such as chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear. Polymer Factory's dendritic products will be one of the key components in the development of nanofiber-based filtration membranes. Our dendritic products will empower the membranes with function being both scavengers and neutralizer of harmful bacteria, viruses etc."
