Safeture AB: Wildfire Risk Continues to Rise for Travelers Worldwide

2026-07-20 14:02:11

Travelers should prepare for another exceptionally severe wildfire season in 2026, according to the new Wildfire Informer 2026, published by Safeture in collaboration with Riskline, a leading global provider of travel risk intelligence.

During the first half of 2026, the total area affected by wildfires worldwide was more than 50 percent above the long-term average and nearly double the level recorded in the same period in 2024. Experts expect the risk of large-scale fires to rise further for the rest of the year.

Europe also continues to face elevated wildfire risks following one of its most severe wildfire seasons on record in 2025.

"Wildfires can develop and spread extremely quickly. It is therefore essential to identify risks early and provide affected travelers with reliable information and clear guidance," said Marcel Brandt, Chief Sales Officer at Safeture. "Organizations need to continuously monitor changing conditions to respond quickly and appropriately. This has become a critical part of professional travel risk management."

According to the Wildfire Informer 2026, the potential development of a "Super El Niño" - an unusually strong phase of the recurring climate pattern - could further increase wildfire risk in several parts of the world.

North America, the Amazon rainforest, and Australia face particularly serious threats. In the Asia-Pacific region, Indonesia and India remain highly exposed. The frequency and intensity of wildfires are also increasing across parts of the Middle East and Africa.

Essential Wildfire Safety Advice for Travelers

Safeture and Riskline recommend that travelers follow these precautions:

  • Always follow official warnings and evacuation orders. The direction and speed of a wildfire can be difficult to assess based solely on smoke or wind conditions. Evacuation instructions should be followed immediately.
  • Remember that smoke may be more dangerous than flames. During periods of heavy smoke, remain indoors whenever possible and limit time outdoors to essential activities.
  • Leave the area immediately if visibility suddenly drops or a fire is spreading nearby. Do not wait for conditions to worsen.
  • Seek shelter if evacuation is no longer possible. Stay as close to the ground as possible, and when available, breathe through a damp cloth until help arrives or a safe escape route is available.
