"This means that our operations are the source of roughly 25 percent of the major climate benefits created in Swedish forests each year through new trees. The foundation for growing forests, which bind large amounts of carbon, is that mature trees that have stopped growing are harvested and replaced with quality seedlings that grow better than previous generations," says Kent Jonsson, business developer at SCA's nursery.

The delivery volume for 2025 was slightly lower than in 2024.

"Normally we deliver around 100 million seedlings. In 2025 we had planned to plant some lodgepole pine in our own forests, but after a dialogue with the reindeer husbandry industry, we have reduced the number of lodgepole pine seedlings," says Thomas Vestman, nursery manager.says Thomas Vestman, nursery manager.

"Weather conditions also had an impact. The cold spring delayed the planting season, and during the hot July many chose to wait."

Of the total deliveries, pine accounted for 55.8 million seedlings and spruce for 27.5 million. Deliveries of frozen seedlings in corrugated cardboard boxes amounted to 3.6 million, mainly to forest owners who plant themselves.

"By sending frozen seedlings directly to landowners, both timber buyers and landowners save time," says Kent Jonsson.

During the year, SCA phased out the use of styrofoam beads in the seedling trays.

"We have made a climate and environmental improvement by now using only sawdust, which is more environmentally friendly and gives the seed good protection during germination," explains Kent Jonsson.

SCA expects to deliver just under 100 million seedlings in 2026. Storm Johannes is not expected to affect this year's deliveries but may have an impact ahead of 2027. In the first quarter of 2026, SCA is also launching a new webshop for seedlings.

This year's sowing at the Bogrundet and Wifström nurseries has begun, and the cooling stores are being filled with seed-filled trays in preparation for spring and the move out to the greenhouses.
