Cambi has been awarded a contract to supply a second B6 thermal hydrolysis
system to the Psyttalia wastewater treatment plant in Athens, Greece.
The Psyttalia plant is the main wastewater treatment facility of the Greater
Athens area. It is also one of the largest in Europe, with a capacity to serve a
population equivalent of 5.6 million. Cambi's first thermal hydrolysis unit in
the country has been in operation at the site since 2015 and was chosen to
improve sludge dewatering efficiency, increase biogas production, and reduce the
energy needed for biosolids drying.
"The Psyttalia plant contributes significantly to the protection of the
ecosystem of Athens' metropolitan area, and we are excited to increase our
contribution to our client's effort in this regard. The Cambi unit already on
site has helped enhance the production of biogas, which helps cover a
significant portion of the plant's energy needs. Adding a second train will
further reduce energy costs. The plant is also a great example of the benefits
of thermal hydrolysis for locations that thermally process biosolids," remarked
Cambi Group CEO Eirik Fadnes.
The contract was awarded by the Joint Venture "AKTOR SA - AVAX SA - ERGOTEM SA".
The thermal hydrolysis unit is set to be delivered in summer 2023.
