Bane NOR and Gjermundshaug Anlegg – part of the Eleda Group – have signed an agreement to build a new double track through the centre of Stange and to rebuild Stange station.

This is the fourth major contract in the InterCity Kleverud-Sørli-Åkersvika project, which covers 30 km of new double track through Stange Municipality. Prior to this, Gjermundshaug Anlegg has been a subcontractor responsible for groundworks in the construction of the 1 km railway bridge in Tangenvika, which is a key component of the InterCity project.

The contract includes 1.8 km of double track, railway installations, noise barriers and a service building. Stange station was converted into a functional hub with new commuter parking, platform roofs and lifts as well as cycling paths and footpaths. The work also included a new water and waste system, a new bus terminal and re-routing of roads. The contract is valued at NOK 1.1 billion.

Challenging assignments

“Bane NOR has a key major task in rolling out the ultramodern infrastructure of tomorrow so that more people can travel and more goods can be transported on our emissions-free railways. Getting the right quality and expertise out into the market to complete these assignments is crucial for us. Additionally, finding solutions that minimise emissions and protect local residents during construction has been important,” says Eirik Harding Hansen, project manager for this megaproject at Bane NOR megaproject.

Safe, efficient hub

“We are pleased to be part of developing Norway’s new rail system. The new station in Stange will be an efficient hub, with short travel distances and clear information. A central issue for us is that the design of the station provides good, safe solutions for pedestrians and cyclists in central Stange. Our experience and technical solutions will also reduce emissions and the impact on the environment,” says Pål Ligård, CEO of Gjermundshaug Anlegg.
“This assignment from Bane NOR is yet another confirmation that we are on the right path, making further progress in the rail segment. The scope of this contract will ensure job opportunities for several years to come, facilitating further development and growth,” Pål Ligård concludes.

Facts about the double track in Stange

  • The development of the rail network that runs through Stange Municipality, from Kleverud in the south to Åkersvika in the north, comprises nearly 30 km of new double track. This project is intended to ensure that seven passenger and freight trains can run per hour in both directions, between Hamar and Oslo.

  • The double track has been constructed to allow trains to run at speeds of up to 250 km per hour.

  • A new 3.1 km rail tunnel will be constructed between Kleverud and Espa. This route will then continue over Tangenvika on a railway bridge over 1 km long.

  • The double track will continue across the Tangen peninsula, where a completely new station area will be constructed northwest of the current one.

  • In the northern part of the municipality, the route will be built on both the current tracks and on new terrain. Once rebuilt, Stange station will look new.
